Types of Nursing Assistants in Arizona

In Arizona, there are two levels of nursing assistants — Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) and Licenced Nursing Assistants (LNAs).

CNAs are nursing assistants who pass an approved CNA course and the state manual skills/written exams. Their names are then placed on the CNA registry.

LNAs are nursing assistants who meet the same educational and exam requirements as CNAs, but they also pay fees for licensure, initial fingerprinting, and renewal to the Arizona State Board of Nursing.

LNAs hold a license, undergo federal and state criminal background testing, and have a higher level of review by the Board for professional conduct standards.

How Long Is a Certified Nursing Assistant Training Program?

In Arizona, nursing assistant training programs must be 120 hours long, with a minimum of 40 didactic hours, 20 skills lab hours, and 40 instructor-supervised clinical hours, including a minimum of 20 hours in Long-Term Care.
